In August 2008, ODJ members toured the OSU Canine Research Collection. Below are pictures of our visit. Click on one to see a bigger view.

 October 2007 Update

Wow! There have been a lot of changes, all to the good, this past year.

You’ve probably already noticed that we’re no longer the Canine Research Library. Because the holdings are more than books, we changed “Library” to “Collection” to recognize our magazines, photos, pedigrees, correspondence, slides, scrapbooks, etc. More than 100 boxes have been delivered in the last few months and more are waiting to go.

We’re still in the business of gathering! Remember, our goal is to collect materials related to dog shows and the people involved in them. As you, or someone you know, runs out of storage room, downsizes or passes away, please send all types of paper items, film and medallions to us for permanent safekeeping where future hobbyists and researchers can access them.

Donations have been received from Dr. Lee Reasin, Helen Miller Fisher, Anne Rogers Clark’s estate, Diann Ellis from Joy Tongue’s estate, Dennis Day from Billy Aschenbrenner’s estate, David Carpenter from Mae Carpenter’s estate, Dr. Robert Miller, Bessie Pickens from Lloyd Stacey’s estate, the Jennifer Berry Collection, Joanna Sering, Jackie Root from Irene Khatoonian Schlintz’s estate, Janet Wilcox, Paul Booher, Betty Winthers, Barbara Young-Smith, Charles Roberts – and more.

We have nearly 750 books, hundreds of photos going back to the 1950’s, dozens of breed specific magazines including ALL of the Bulldoggers, and a collection of first and last magazine issues, as well as scrapbooks, slides, clippings and correspondence.

Next step is to fund our foundation, and that will begin this winter. The Fund may be used for (but is not restricted to) such things as staffing costs, graduate student support, equipment, supplies and the purchase of items for the collection. Donations in any amount are welcome, and there is an “In Memoriam” category to honor a special friend or pet. For the next two years donations over $2000 will be recognized by membership in the Founder’s Category.

For further information see The Valley Library's Special Collections department and scroll down - you’ll find our preview page. The Canine Collection has been coded so that libraries all over the world can view it. Further development of this site is one of the things we’ll fund through the foundation.

Please contact either Dr. Cliff Mead, Director of Special Collections at 541.737.2075, or contact Noreen Cartwright at shewatches@msn.com (503.697.4900) for further information about visitng the Library, gifting via will, arranging for items to be transported, etc.

If you’d like to help we’d love the extra hands!
